In 2006 Johan co-founded Cool Earth, a charity focused on protecting the rainforest and tackling climate change, while also supporting the well-being and livelihoods of the people in those communities.
Since 2007, it has provided cash directly and unconditionally to rainforest communities, helping to maintain forest loss rates below 1% in its partnerships in Peru, Papua New Guinea and The Congo Basin.
2024 marked the first full year of Cool Earth’s Basic Income pilot. Over 200 people from Indigenous communities in the Amazon rainforest had their basic needs met, empowering them to focus on long-term sustainability and forest conservation.
